Match Report v Woodbridge Town (h)

LONG MELFORD 0 - 4 WOODBRIDGE TOWN

SAT 03 AUGUST - THURLOW NUNN PREMIER - Att: 121

This was not the opening day Melford had hoped for, playing some decent football at times but giving away some soft goals. Circumstances were best summed up when ace scorer Jamie Griffiths fired wide from the penalty spot on 80 minutes.

The Villagers found themselves with a mountain to climb after the opening five minute blast, when Woodbridge went two goals to the good.

The first goal after three minutes arrived when Carlos Edwards got down the Melford left flank, and his excellent cross was headed home with force by JAKE RUDGE.

Hardly had Melford taken a breath and the visitors were two up after five minutes, a raking pass found JAKE RUDGE on the Melford right flank, Darren Moyes saved the first shot but from the rebound the ball found the net.

As the shock subsided Melford gradually grew into the game and started to match their opponents, who finished 2nd last season and will aim to win the title this year.

The Villagers forced three corners and the final one saw Steve Adams put in a decent header which cleared the upright.

This was followed by a Melford free kick which found Nathan Rowe and his header was pushed over the bar by keeper Alfie Stronge.

Although Woodbridge enjoyed more of the ball Melford competed well, with a not a lot between the two teams.

On 27 minutes Jamie Griffiths was fouled on the edge of the area, and taking the kick it looked destined for the net only for keeper Stronge to dive full length and push round the post.

Straight from the second half kick off Griffiths ran through on goal and his well struck shot was well saved by Stronge in the Woodbridge goal.

Soon after this arrived a controversial decision, Griffiths took the ball round diving keeper Stronge, and fell to the ground, no penalty given by the referee and a booking for Griffiths for diving.

Despite creating chances Melford went further behind on 66 minutes, Carlos Edwards robbed a Melford defender, his cross found MARK RAY and he found the net from close range.

On 80 minutes Melford were awarded a penalty for handball, and perhaps a summary of the game for Melford ace striker Griffiths fired wide! The first penalty he's missed in a Melford shirt.

Three minutes later and another tangle in the Melford defence saw AARON CHURCHYARD net from close range.

So the game ended with Woodbridge taking all three points, and Melford having some good spells in the game but on the end of a heavy defeat.  CHENOBERET
