Reserves - 2020/21 Season
 David Hennessey (Manager)
RESERVES ROUND-UP  (September 2020)

By the numbers4 games played, 3 wins, 1 draw, 0 losses, 20 players used, 11 goals scored (6 different scorers), 7 goals conceded, 6 yellow cards, 2 red cards

September saw 10 players make their first competitive appearances in a Long Melford shirt, the debutants were:

Jack Delaune, Ismail Marshall, Isaiah Opara, Alfie Parnell, Kyran Quelch, Evan Culmer, Dean Harvey, Emmanuel Okyere, Daniel Williams & Ben Frost.

The opening day of the season saw us take our fledgling side over to take on Wivenhoe Town and it was a debut hat trick from Jack Delaune that secured us all 3 points in a hard fought game.

We followed that up with a Friday night game under the lights up at Hadleigh United, Delaune on the scoresheet again and despite going down to 10 men on 51 minutes it was some resolute defending, a man of the match performance from Macauley Rodgers in goal and a late equaliser from Hassan Ally that saw us come away with a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw.

Next up we welcomed local rivals Cornard United to Stoneylands and it was Delaune again in the spotlight, a man of the match effort saw him score 2 and assist 2 more as we put 4 past Cornard to secure our first home win of the season (4-2) despite another sending off.

September ended with a home game against a side many expect to be in and around the top come the end of the season in Stowmarket Town, in blustery conditions it was a wonder goal from Elliot Walker that secured all 3 points and meant that the reserves finished the month unbeaten and joint top of the table.

Managers Musings -  The thoughts of reserve team manager Dave Hennessey on the month that was:

What a whirlwind of a start. If anyone had told me we’d be unbeaten after 4 games and joint top I’d have probably laughed at them.

As with any new project I felt we’d need time to bed in and gel as a squad before we started really picking up wins, all credit to the lads that they’ve bought into what we are trying to achieve here, they’ve trained hard, listened and put it together on the pitch come game time.

We’ve ridden our luck at times and we are still a long way from the finished article but to match last seasons win total after the opening month of the season shows just how far we’ve come already.

I’m really fortunate to have a great bunch of lads who work their backsides off and when you can count on these boys week in week out (9 lads have played in all 4 games this season) that really helps.

Adding a proven goalscorer in Jack Delaune has been huge (6 in 4 sees him top the goalscoring charts) but having a team that works hard for each other and never gives up is huge and the ‘team first’ mentality makes a world of difference.

If our attitude and effort levels remain the same going forward we will be a test for any team.

I wanted to do a special mentions section then I realised I’d probably have to say something about every player so instead I’m going to use this opportunity to thank those who put so much in behind the scenes on match day, the efforts of these guys allow the players, coaches and myself to just concentrate on football and not have to worry about anything else so without naming names thank you all!

Lastly, September saw a big moment for me in my career as I got to be in the dugout for all 3 FA Cup games with the first team. It was a real ‘pinch me’ moment and was great to see so many come out and support our boys in such a great competition.

I wanted to thank Jamie Bradbury for bringing me in and of course Steve, Mick, Jon and the boys for making me feel part of something special!

Looking forward to some exciting games coming up, let’s see how long we can keep this run going for!
