Pre Season 2020

BOURNE VALE RES. 1 LONG MELFORD RES. 2

(Saturday 29 August 2020)

The Reserves signed off pre-season with a gritty, hard fought win in Ipswich.

The earlier kick off seemed to affect Melford as a quiet first half saw the scores remain all square, although the home side probably shaded it.

Melford were considerably better in the second half, the lively KYLE HURLEY cutting in before flashing a stunning drive past the keeper and into the top corner.

Melford had their chances to add to the lead before conceding a dubious penalty to level the scores.

Max Boulter pulled off a tremendous double save to keep the scores level before an inch perfect corner from Elliot Walker was nodded home at the near post by RICHARD DANIELS.

Melford had chances to add to their tally as theY weathered a late storm and countered effectively but the game ended 2-1.

Manager Dave Hennessey had this to say:

“Great to get more minutes in our legs and in a way it’s a good sign that we can pick up a win despite not being at our best”.

Next up is the Reserves League opener away at Wivenhoe Town Reserves (Sat 5th September).

LONG MELFORD 6 ATHLETIC NEWHAM 1

(Saturday 29 August 2020)

Just 37 seconds into the game and Melford went ahead, a quick ball down the Melford left flank saw the cross from Jamie Griffiths side footed home by BEN TAIT.

With the wind at their backs the visitors presented plenty of problems for Melford with shots twice striking the goal post.

Against the run of play Melford scored a second on 29 minutes a quick accurate pass from Kieran Michaels found JACOB BROWN who netted from ten yards.

On 36 minutes Ben Judge placed the ball into the path of JAMIE GRIFFITHS and the ex Ipswich and Plymouth man, neatly fired the ball into the net.

Soon after this Melford went another goal to the good, a Ben Judge drive deflected to BEN TAIT who pushed home from close range.

The referee awarded Melford a penalty on 47 minutes and NATHAN ROWE converted giving keeper Wilkinson Boateng no chance.

On 51 minutes Melford increased their lead a Griffiths free kick was blocked but from the rebound KIERAN MICHAELS thumped the ball home from 25 yards.

On 70 minutes with Melford changing half their team Newham scored a deserved goal when TONY COOKEY netted from ten yards.

The visitors could have improved their score line after 75 minutes, but the penalty taken by Kaan, was well saved by teenage keeper Finlay Shorten on his debut.

Overall a little flattering the score line against a team with lots of ex League Academy talent, plus an International player Khalifa Jabbie, who plays for Sierra Leone.

Melford will hope for a lot of support for thei FA Cup match at Long Melford on Tuesday September 1st 7.45 ko against Northampton Cheneks.

LONG MELFORD RES. 2 STANWAY ATHLETIC 1

(Wednesday 26 August 2020)

In general an entertaining game with both teams creating chances, and encouraging in terms of spectators with circa 50 people in attendance.

The Border League visitors went ahead after 33 minutes when JAMES HARDY won the ball some 25 yards out and his excellent shot found the net.

On 47 minutes Melford levelled when JACK DELAUNE scored with a glancing header.

On 63 minutes Melford scored the winner when a fine Kyle Hurley ball into the box was finished off by CHARLIE HOLMES from close range.

LONG MELFORD RES. 0 FC CLACTON RES. 0

(Saturday 22 August 2020)

A tough test against a well organised FC Clacton Reserves side, but Melford are looking in good shape with the new season just around the corner.

Melford perhaps could have nicked the win with some more clinical finishing but overall a good work-out and now it's on to the next reserve team friendly (home to Stanway Athletic on Wednesday, 7.45pm).

OLD NEWTON UNITED 1 LONG MELFORD 2

(Saturday 22 August 2020)

For their latest friendly the Villagers travelled to SIL Senior side Old Newton who had an impressive win against Lakenheath in midweek.

Again Melford were minus five of their regular squad members through injury and holidays. In a game dominated by a force 3 wind directly down the pitch football was never going to be an easy process.

To their credit Melford kicking into the wind played some tidy football in the first half and took the lead when a great ball from Kieran Michaels to the far post, saw Ben Judge have his shot on goal blocked but BEN TAIT made sure from close range.

Straight from the restart, Old Newton levelled on 47 minutes when a mix up in the Melford defence presented the ball to LEWIS COOKE who ran thirty yards to fire past Matt Walker in the Melford goal.

Melford found a deserved winner on 54 minutes when JACOB BROWN fired home from 25 yards.

LONG MELFORD 3 BRIGHTLINGSEA REGENT 3

(Tuesday 18 August 2020)

Nathan Rowe (pictured) scored twice in tonight's behind closed doors friendly.  Against opposition who play two steps higher in the Isthmian Premier League,  The Villagers produced some good calibre football.

Against the general flow the visitors took the lead after 24 minutes when EMMANUEL MACHAYA netted with a deflected shot from ten yards. Melford supporters will remember Manny scoring some important goals in the club's successful League Cup run in 2019 (while on loan from Bury Town).

On 39 minutes the score was doubled after a penalty was awarded for handball with KANE GILBERT netting from the sport.

In an excellent Melford move with Jamie Griffiths feeding BEN JUDGE Melford got a goal back on 42 minutes.

On 49 minutes Melford levelled when Griffiths was floored in the box, and NATHAN ROWE converted from the spot.

Soon after this Melford were unlucky when a Kieran Michaels free kick was scrambled off the goal line.

On 52 minutes Melford went ahead when in a goalmouth scramble NATHAN ROWE back-heeled into the net.

In a fast and furious finish Brightlingsea equalised on 66 minutes when Melford lost concentration from a free kick and JORDAN BARNETT netted from close range.

LONG MELFORD 2 NEEDHAM MARKET 3

(Saturday 15 August 2020)

A satisfying display by a depleted Villagers against higher league Needham who fielded different teams in each half.

The visitors showed their sharpness and movement in the first half and Melford guest keeper Floyd Croll, made two magnificent saves to keep the score at 0-0.  Although the visitors were enjoying more possession, it was Melford who went ahead.

Ben Tait playing as a striker which is not his usual position, forced a throw in near the Needham right flank corner flag.  And from this and on 43 minutes Melford went ahead. From the throw in Sam Mills played in Callum Hemson and his delightful cross was met on the volley by JAMIE GRIFFITHS and the ball rocketed into the Needham net, giving Ben Garnham in the visitors goal no chance.

On 57 minutes Needham levelled the score line. A disputed corner was awarded to Needham, on 57 minutes with Melford looking for a foul for a push in the back. The corner found the Melford near post and for half a minute the ball ping ponged around the Melford box, eventually JEMEL GOODWIN converted from close range aided by a slight deflection.

Square passes not far from goal can spell trouble against high calibre opposition and so it proved the case for Melford, on 62 minutes NOAH COLLARD took advantage to fire home from ten yards out.

Melford were back on level terms after 68 minutes when from just outside the area a KIERAN MICHAELS deflected free kick found the net.

The last goal arrived on 71 minutes when a debatable penalty was awarded to Needham and CHARLIE WARREN netted from the spot. For both teams a good workout.

HATFIELD PEV. RES 1 LONG MELFORD RES 3

(Saturday 15 August 2020)

A strong 21-man reserve team made the journey to our hosts Hatfield Peverel Reserves, where we ran out 3-1 winners.

Dean Harvey and Jack Delaune scored their first goals in Long Melford colours after Hassan Ally got the opener. A solid performance from the Melford lads.

Thank you to Hatfield Peverel for hosting and a speedy recovery to the lad stretchered off with a double leg break.

RESERVES 2 UNDER 18s 0  (10th Aug)

Tonight's inter-club friendly was another excellent game with two large squads involved. The first half belonged to the Under 18s who were unlucky not to find the scoresheet.

MAX WILLIAMS opened the scoring in the second half when he picked up a loose ball and fired home from close range. The second goal came on 84 minutes when after several blocked shots HASSAN ALLY netted from two yards out. A rich array of players for both teams.

Next friendly is the Under 18s v Mildenhall Town on Thursday, then on Saturday the 1st Team play Needham Market while the Reserves face Hatfield Peverel.

DEDHAM OLD BOYS 1 LONG MELFORD RES. 0  (8th Aug)

A narrow defeat for the Reserves at Dedham Old Boys from the Border League Premier. Conditions were tough in the heat on a difficult pitch but manager Dave Hennessey was pleased with the performance:

"An early mistake for their goal but a solid run out for the lads and we learned plenty from today’s game against strong opponents."

Thank you to @steve_cameraman on Twitter for the action photo.

LONG MELFORD 1 WEST WRATTING 2  (8th Aug)

With several regular starters unavailable Melford included some new faces and tried a few players in different positions.

There wasn't a lot between the two teams but the visitors shaded it overall,  taking the lead on 64 minutes when ex Ely City player ALEX KNOWLES swivelled neatly to fire home from fifteen yards.

On 78 minutes ex Haverhill Rovers player KYLE CLARKE netted from the penalty spot for the visitors.  On 90 minutes Melford pulled a goal back when BEN JUDGE converted from the penalty spot.

Credit to both sets of players for their efforts in stifling heat and nice to see guesting in goal for Melford ex Ipswich and Wigan custodian Floyd Croll, home from Italy where he now works as a teacher.

LONG MELFORD 5 BACTON UNITED 0  (5th Aug)

In our first behind closed doors friendly at Stoneylands, Bacton missed three good chances in the first half. Then after a 9 man change at half time Melford scored three goals in the opening five minutes, eventually winning 5-0. The scorers were Ben Judge (2), Ben Tait, Jamie Griffiths and Callum Hemson (pen).

BILDESTON RANGERS 5
LONG MELFORD RES. 1

(1st Aug)

The Reserves got their pre-season friendlies underway against Bildeston Rangers first team.  It was a tough game for the new Reserves side, up against experienced opponents who included former Melford first teamers David 'Bart' Lorimer and Trevor Vinyard in their squad.

As expected with over 20 players involved including a host of trialists it was a disjointed performance at times from Melford, and Bildeston ran out comfortable 5-1 winners.

New reserve team manager David Hennessey said after the match: "It was a bit of a footballing lesson for my new young team with the home side worthy winners. We will learn from today and be better for it in the long run."
