Reserves Report v Framlingham (home)

LONG MELFORD RES 1 - 0 FRAMLINGHAM TOWN RES

THURLOW NUNN RESERVE LEAGUE - SATURDAY 26 OCTOBER 2019

The feel good factor currently going through the club continued when the Reserves won their first match under the new leadership of Mike Davis.

Although like most matches in East Anglia today the conditions were horrible, both sides played some good football in an evenly contested first half.

Midway through the second half Framlingham were awarded a penalty but Max Boulter made a fine save.

At the other end a left wing corner avoided several players and JOSH NORRIS half volleyed into the roof of the net from the angle of the six yard box.

Framlingham pushed forward and had their centre half sent off but it was never a dirty game.  The home side held on to give Mike and his assistant Tom a winning start.

Here are Mike's thoughts on his first match in charge:

"An awful lot of credit has to go to Tom who was pretty amazing for me in the dugout taking the warm ups and some of the team talk. That's the very first time we've worked together in the same team.

Everything today was new to everyone, but everyone came together. The whole team bought in to what I and Tom had asked them to go with in our pre-match meeting.

Max Boulter was unbelievably superb today. He stood in for Ashley Hayhoe who was unavailable. Max was very commanding in goal and controlling at the back.

A penalty was awarded in the second half to Framlingham which if scored would have been against the run of play, Max saved the penalty and you could see with the work he'd already done that he was in his element and grew more in confidence.

The defence was solid. Having conceded 16 goals within the last 3 matches I had to bolster the defence, I wanted to restore confidence and moral providing a positive mental attitude and affect things in a positive way.

I changed the shape and the defence I chose worked well. Max and Tyrese Williams I'd taken out of defence and used them down the flanks, with their blistering pace and ball control I felt they would be more effective in advanced roles

I made Toby Newman the Captain for this match and will decide as to who will have it long term, as I never make my strikers or goalkeepers captain. Max now in goal had been the captain to this point.

We had so many compliments from players, parents and even the opposing team said that it was nice that we were playing youngsters, which to me is what Reserve/Development football is all about.

Our aim is always to win, but as long as we play as well as we can and to our strengths, and I can produce players for Jamie and the First Team that's what gives me a buzz, that's what I believe it's all about.

Tom and I worked well today and to our strengths, the players were all to a man exceptional, a couple saying that no ones arguing and the chemistry has changed, that we're all enjoying it.

The referee Matt Elliott was excellent in my opinion, although not every decision went our way, we lived with that and moved on focusing on gaining back possession and maintaining control.

On to the next match...Bring it on.

I would also like to thank Jamie and the Board in appointing me manager of the Reserves at Long Melford FC. It is a privilege and a pleasure to work with the current Reserve Team. I'm excited to be taking on this challenging role and hope that we can build on this win and that the fans get behind the team to enjoy the journey with us. "
