Reserves Report v Hadleigh (County Cup)

LONG MELFORD RES. 1 - 2 HADLEIGH UTD RES.

SUFFOLK SENIOR RESERVE CUP - SATURDAY 09 NOVEMBER

Callum Denson scored Long Melford's goal today in what was a "game of two halves" to use the football cliche.

Here's manager Mike Davis with his thoughts on the game:

"I named a squad of 14, a little thin bearing in mind several players had other commitments and a couple of the lads we had were carrying knocks. I had to make a late change bringing in young Elliott Moss to the squad.

After a minute's silence before kick-off, we went into the game feeling confident but we knew this would be a tough test as Hadleigh are a good side and beat us 5-0 a few weeks ago.

As expected, Hadleigh stormed out of the blocks. A physically strong side who played some good, free-flowing, attacking football and dominated much of the first half.

Several attacks on our goal were made which our keeper, Max Boulter, did well to repel. However, within 8 minutes we were hit by an early goal.

Our Captain, Toby Newman who was as usual ever inspiring, led a good back-line, the defence worked hard throughout the match with Charlie Coy, Harry Roberts and George Baldwin all doing a good job in protecting the keeper, playing the ball comfortably between them at the back looking for the gaps in Hadleigh's midfield to play in to.

Our shape overall was good but Hadleigh had the power to cut through and towards the end of the first half scored again.

The lads showed great character by not giving up, battling hard and playing some exciting football , with Oscar Smith, Haaris Khan, Ashley Hayhoe and Youhanna Farah all battling hard and playing well in the middle of the park.

Elliott Moss when coming on showed good promise and also showing a very good work rate making several breaks forward.

We had some very good moments playing some attractive football and when Tyrese Williams and Kyle Hurley were played through on each wing on several occasions they opened Hadleigh up with their speed and some great footwork in turning Hadleigh's defence putting the ball into the box for our strikers to meet. Despite this Hadleigh held firm and led 2-0 at the break.

The second half was a good all round performance and Haaris in the centre of the pitch turned a couple of players racing through to put CALLUM DENSON in on goal who was in no doubt where to fire home the ball, 1-2 back in the game.

Our strikers performed well which consisted of Callum Denson, Elliott Moss and Ben Lodge, who came on also showing what potential he clearly has.

The team never stopped pressing when in possession and then closing down quickly when out of possession with their work rate, a complete contrast to the first half.

Callum, in particular, playing some very intelligent football dropping to collect the ball, carrying forward and keeping the opposition defence busy.

We continued to press Hadleigh and looked the stronger side. We received a free-kick late on in the match and thought that this could be the opportunity to draw level. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be with the Ref then blowing the full-time whistle.

Tom and I are so proud of this group of lads. Yes we got off to a slow start, but showed great character to come back into the match proving to be a much tougher proposition than the previous league meeting when we faced Hadleigh. "

LONG MELFORD squad: Max Boulter, Toby Newman (C), Charlie Coy, Harry Roberts, George Baldwin, Haaris Khan, Oscar Smith, Youhanna Farah, Kyle Hurely, Tyrese Williams, Callum Denson, Ben Lodge, Ashley Hayhoe, Elliott Moss   Att: 60
