Reserves Report v Mersea Island

LONG MELFORD RES 7 - 2 MERSEA ISLAND (aet)

TOMMY THOMPSON CUP QUARTER FINAL - SAT 23 FEB

PICTURED: Dan Smith scored twice on his return after six months sidelined with injury. Picture by PENGELLY PHOTGRAPHY.

With the score at two goals each at 71 minutes and with Mersea taking control, it was hard to envisage this might be the final result.

In the end Mersea looked very tired and Melford took full advantage. The Melford squad featured six Under 18 players and that had some impact in extra time.

First goal came for Melford after 9 minutes a cross from the right wing from Sam Newton was met by PERRY NEWMAN who made no mistake.

The visitors matched Melford and levelled on 24 minutes when a deflected cross found the neat and promising youngster JACK MAHON at the far post and he tucked the ball home.

In the space of five minutes Melford cleared two Mersea efforts off the goal line to remain in the game.

At the start of the second half Max Boulter in the Melford goal pushed an effort from Dan Gibbons round the goal post.

On 56 minutes Melford again took the lead, a great corner from the excellent Newman found JOSH COLLINS at the far post to push home.

As the game went on Mersea got a firmer grip on the game and the levelled on 71 minutes when a long ball from the Mersea defence cleared the Melford back line and DAN GIBBONS ran through to net a quality goal.

It was now Mersea who looked the more likely to take the game, with Melford defending under pressure.

At the end of ninety minutes no further score so into extra time.

Soon after the start of extra time a ball over the top found WILL HOWE who ran through the Mersea defence to net for Melford.

Although Mersea hit the Melford cross bar at end of the first period the second half of extra time started to with Melford a goal in front.

Then Melford took over, the Mersea keeper made a hash of his clearance and DAN SMITH slid the ball into the net.

Then WILL HOWE fired against the upright and headed home the rebound.

The goal of the match arrived when STEVE COLE fired home from 25 yards.

The final goal came in the final minute when the returning DAN SMITH netted from the angle to celebrate a return after 6 months on the injured list.As a well known sage once said ”It s a funny old game!”CHENOBERET
