Reserves Report v Wivenhoe Town (away)

WIVENHOE TOWN RES. 0 - 0 LONG MELFORD RES.

THURLOW NUNN RESERVE LEAGUE - SAT 16 NOVEMBER

A point today takes the Reserves up to 8th in the table, here is manager Mike Davis with his thoughts on today's draw.

This was a match that we came away from happy that we'd kept another clean sheet, but also feeling we'd dropped 2 points.

We took a 16 man squad for the trip to Wivenhoe so we had strength on the field and in-depth.

I was pleased to see Elliot Walker join up with us who, having sustained a further twist to his ankle, so this being the first time Tom, myself and Elliot were together in the dugout.

Craig Lee, our centre back who is recovering from injury was also with us. Craig, ever keen in providing much encouragement to the lads and who I enjoy having along with us.

As with last week's match against Hadleigh, we grew into this game starting to come alive and push Wivenhoe back as the game went on.

Our defence was solid today with Dek, Ant and Charlie rotating as centre backs, with Zino and George as the wing-backs.

When we were breached by a Wivenhoe attack Max, or should we start calling him 'Safe Hands' was there to safely gather up the ball.

Ash, when he came on for George; who picked up a knock, was solid again at left-back. He was comfortable on the ball in defence, a player we can use in defence or midfield.

We rotated the midfield to find our strongest pairings as Wivenhoe were creating problems for us in this area. Haaris, Harry, Oscar, Youhanna and Callum linking up well.

Much of the joy we created for ourselves came down the wings with Ty, Kyle and Max W carrying the ball well with Elliott and Callum making their way into the box to meet the ball.  I was pleased to see us getting forward in numbers.

We are still like a Tiger without it's teeth, we play some lovely free-flowing attacking football but we need to test the keepers more with the old cliche being, 'taking our chances.'

We did have some great moment bursting through the centre with Callum, Youhanna and Elliot gliding through the Wivenhoe defence but not quite able to find the net and I do attribute a great deal of this to the sticky pitch.

We like to move the ball along the ground playing to feet and at a fast pace. Today we found, as we will within this league that there are some big physical Reserve sides, and with the ground as slow as it was with the ball dragging this slowed us down thus coming into closer contact with the opposition players more frequently than I'd have liked and found ourselves playing their game.

Once again, I can only say that we are all still learning about ourselves and each other. We have come a long way in a short period.

We are developing well and within the Reserves, it's always going to be a work in progress. This is a great squad of players that the management team enjoy working with.

Our aim is to continue to develop all of our players to the best possible standards and to the best of the players' ability, enabling them to enjoy their football and with a view to progressing further and hopefully into the first team.

A big thank you to the parents and fans who made the trip to Wivenhoe to support this young and exciting Melford team.
