The View From The Dugout

View From The Management

" 2019 has certainly been an eventful and exciting year for us here at Stoneylands, and it’s be great to share some memorable moments with everyone associated with Long Melford Football Club.

The year began with us in the bottom five of the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division on 21 points, following a horrid run of results that put us in the mix for a relegation battle for the second half of the campaign.

We always believed that this team had the ability to compete higher in the league, and this season have proved that with the addition of two or three players to really bolster the squad with extra quality.

Now, we are in and around the top six, are hopefully just a couple of games away from surpassing last season’s points total of 39 and if we keep working hard together on and off the pitch we can achieve an unprecedented finish to the campaign.

There have been some real highlights for us this year, and as we now going into our final game of the decade on Saturday at home to Newmarket Town, it’s a good time to look back at five top times we’ll never forget.

Cup Final Win: As rank outsiders at the start of the season, it was amazing to go all the way to the League Challenge Cup final. Having seen off sides like Hadleigh, Woodbridge and Stowmarket, then after Will Wingfield’s late, late winner against Benfleet, the boys wrapped up a 1-0 win over Fakenham Town at Diss, again a big goal from the skipper.

Staying Up: As management, football takes over your life and when you are trying to help a club avoid relegation, it can be very tense and it was all we really thought of during the second half of last season. The boys never faltered and their hard work and commitment finally paid off with three back to back wins to end the season. Ashley Skeggs’s injury-time winner at home to Haverhill Rovers was a massive moment that sent us into the final game with our fate in our own hands.

Seven on the bounce: It’s hard enough to win two or three games on the trot, so to go seven league matches without dropping a point is an amazing feat, especially considering we beat much-fancied Woodbridge and Norwich United away, Wroxham at home, as well as thrashing local rivals Hadleigh 6-1. Even runaway leaders Stowmarket Town haven’t bettered seven consecutive league wins this season. Yet.

Top Two: Despite seeing our winning streak come to an end, the 1-1 draw here with FC Clacton last month moved us up to second in the table, the club’s highest ever position in the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division, a sensational achievement and one that gave everyone belief that this club has great potential.

Jersey: Football is not only about the game, but about people, and we are extremely lucky to have a brilliant bunch of loyal lads who pull on the black and white every week. To celebrate the end of last season, we had a trip away during the May Bank Holiday, heading over to Jersey for a brilliant weekend which will live long in the memory, particularly Mick being attacked by seagulls, and other stories! To return home on the Sunday and then lift the League Cup on the Monday capped an unforgettable season.

Football is also about community, and clubs like us rely on the support and encouragement from the locals, so we thank you for getting behind us again this year.

We want to keep building this club and get even more people involved, so if you have a friend or family member keen to play a part in a great club, bring them along next week, get them following us on social media and keeping up to date with the goings on at a very unique football club right on your doorstep here in Long Melford.

Thanks again, and we’d like to wish everyone a very happy and prosperous new year.  All the best. "
